New Year, New Smile Goals

New Year, New Smile Goals

2021 is finally here! If you're like us, you already have New Year's goals in place. Some common New Year's resolutions include working out, saving money, and living a happier and healthier life. Many people have big goals this year, but one resolution that's often forgotten is better oral health. So, why not make one of your New Year's goals to boost your dental health? Below, Dr. O'Grady, your Denver Highlands dentist, shares a few new year, new smile goals you can include for 2021.

Good resolutions will keep your teeth healthy, and any of the following techniques can go a long way towards giving you a stronger, healthier smile in the coming year:

Enjoy More Fruits & Vegetables

Remember when your parents told you to eat more fruit and vegetables as a kid? Ok, we hope you've maintained this habit while you grow up! There are many health benefits of eating fruit and vegetables, and many of these benefits apply to your teeth and gums. If you do not eat clean, healthy food and drink, your oral and dental health is one of the first areas affected.

In the new year, try adding fruit and vegetables if you're looking for a snack instead of chips and sweets. Nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, and nuts can combat bacterial build-up. Our friend Dr. David Moghadam, a family dentist in Easton, PA, says that vegetables like celery and fruit like apples will help to clean the bacteria and the plaque that is trapped between your teeth.

Cut Back on Alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake can be highly detrimental to your general health, but your oral health can be seriously compromised if you are not vigilant. Alcohol can damage and weaken your gums, causing them to recede, which can lead to damaged enamel or a possible loss of teeth. It is true that if you use tobacco products on a daily basis, have a bad diet, and regularly drink large quantities of alcohol, you are at a much higher risk of periodontitis, more commonly known as gum disease.
